To me, Instagram is the best platform out there for small businesses and creative entrepreneurs to generate leads and convert them to actual paying customers. With patience and the right strategies, you can sell without being salesy. I'm not going to say it is easy and that you don't have to put in the hard work. In fact I'm not going to sugar coat this for you. I see many coaches online saying how easy it is to make money online and I honestly think that's such a huge lie! Yes, it gets easier if you have grown an engaged target audience and know how to convert these followers to customers, yes it gets easier after you made 101 mistakes along the way and yes, it gets easier if you have a coach or have invested in some courses to have more clarity in your business. But it's still hard work, persistence and a whole lot of research. (Research that I've done for you!)
When I first started Instagram Marketing as a niche, I didn't know what I was going to sell or how to monetise it. I just knew I was interested to teach people the strategies I've learnt myself and the mistakes I made. I started sharing educational content on my Instagram feed about how to attract an engaged target audience to your Instagram page and people started DM-ing me asking me for help. I didn't a course or coaching program in place then, but when I started to get these DMs, I gained more clarity on how I was going to help these people, and that was when I came up with my 1-1 coaching program. I didn't have a sales page but I just explained what I wanted to teach them in the program and 2 people signed up the week I launched the program!
These are the things I did before selling my 1-1 coaching program...
TIP 1: You need to have a content strategy in place.
Thankfully you don't have to take years in building your Instagram page like me. I had to spend years doing that because I never knew what content strategy even meant till last year! A content strategy refers "to the management of pretty much any tangible media that you create and own: written, visual, downloadable ... you name it. It is the piece of your marketing plan that continuously demonstrates who you are and the expertise you bring to your industry." Don't just post for the sake of posting. Think of how your target audience and client can benefit from each piece of content you create. This high-value content is what will draw them into your brand, make them see you as the expert and this is why they will eventually buy from you.
TIP 2: You need to be consistent.
I found this the hardest because I gain momentum very quickly when doing something, and then burn out and not touch it for a (long) time. If you are not there for your audience, they aren't going to miss you. They'll turn to your competitors and other experts because, well they are there. It takes some time (at least a few months) before you gain enough traction to your page and garner trust from your followers. Giving them a couple of posts on Instagram does not make you the expert in their eyes. Appearing consistently once a day for at least 1 month will.

TIP 3: Be relatable.
It is a fine balance between being envied and relatable. You want your clients to look up to you, see you as an expert and pay you for your services or product. At the same time you want them to be able to relate to you and your brand. Because connection is ultimately what will make them want to choose you over many other brands! Talk to your followers, reply to their comments and DMs! A lot of businesses and personal brand owners ignore this and don't even know who their audience is. Show them your behind the scenes and your product creation process. Involve them like you would with a friend.
TIP 4: Communicate what your product or service can do for them effectively.
Consumers nowadays are so spoilt for choice that they aren't going to give you an extra minute to understand your product. They need to understand what your product or service can do for them the moment they visit your Instagram page. Being crystal clear on how your product or service can benefit your potential customers and then communicating these points to them clearly will increase your chances of making a sale.
TIP 5: Believe in what you're selling!
If you're not even confident of how, your product or service you can help your future clients, chances are they can smell it. Before you even create it, is it something you would buy yourself? Don't create products or services because you think you can make quick cash. Create something you really believe in and know will benefit your target client.
Do you realise none of my 5 tips include direct sales tactics? Selling doesn't have to be difficult. Hopefully these tips are some things you can start implementing straightaway!
